To view the VNC session you need one of two things:

Browser version

The viewer can be run as a java applet in a suitable browser. We have tested a range of browsers, and had success with the following:

Standalone viewer

The standalone viewer tends to work rather better than the java version, and feels quicker. We've tested it on Solaris, Windows NT 3.51, and Windows 95 and later, all with success.

If you're going to be using VNC a lot, or if the performance of the Java version is disappointing, try using the standalone version.

Make sure you're using version 4.0 or later - the performance is a lot better than the the 3 viewer!

Network Connection

Most of our testing is done on a fairly fast local area network. If we have difficulties with VNC in that environment, you're going to find it very difficult to get any joy accessing us remotely.

I've used VNC on a 33.6K modem connection, and it does work, but you have to be very patient. With 150K or 300K broadband it's very nice.

Summary

If you've got a PC but don't have X, then VNC is for you!

If you've got a Mac but don't have X, then VNC is for you! You will, however, have to use the java applet - RealVNC don't have a Mac client - or a 3rd-party client.

If you've got a Unix machine or have X, then VNC is still for you. To use X in the 21st century you'll have to tunnel it over SSH, and the performance over the general intenet is poor. VNC tends to behave much better than X when accessing a remote site, and you have the added benefit of being able to reconnect to an old session.
